Horizon Zero Dawn publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment sold more than 2.6 million copies of the game within its first two weeks of release, the company announced today.
That represents worldwide sales of both retail and digital copies. Sony released the critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 exclusive on Feb. 28 in North America, on March 1 in Europe and on March 2 in Japan and Asia. The figure consists of sales data collected through March 12 in North America and Europe, and through March 13 in Asia.
That gives Horizon Zero Dawn the best launch for a Sony-published new IP in PlayStation 4 history, the company said in a news release. For comparison’s sake, the well-established Uncharted franchise topped 2.7 million units with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in its first week of release last May. Sony also said today that Horizon Zero Dawn’s launch is the “biggest debut ever” for Amsterdam-based developer Guerrilla Games, which created the Killzone series.
“We’re thrilled that Horizon Zero Dawn has been embraced by critics and players alike,” said Hermen Hulst, managing director of Guerrilla Games. “Developing the game was a labor of love, so it’s extremely satisfying to see that it elicits the same passion and enthusiasm from the gaming public that we felt during its development.”
Hulst added, “This is only the beginning of Aloy’s story and our exploration of the world of Horizon Zero Dawn,” and said that Guerrilla is “already hard at work on an expansion to the story.” It’s unclear if he was referring to the development of add-on content for the story of Horizon Zero Dawn, or to the start of work on a sequel; we’ve reached out to Sony for more details, and will update this article with any information we receive.
