Hilton was born to Hungarian immigrants whose initial name was Hircsak (which is sometimes spelled “Hircksac”), who left their homes at the time of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. They arrived in Britain and initially sought asylum, but later changed their names to Hilton. Hilton’s dad, Istvan who was goalie of the Hungarian national team of ice hockey and was regarded as to be among the best hockey players in Europe during the 1930s. When he arrived in Britain his parents employed in catering for Heathrow Airport. They separated at the age of Steve was just five years old. This led to what he described as a difficult time and a huge financial strain. His mother worked at an outlet for shoes to make the few dollars they had.
